Theft of Laptop

On May 11, 2023 at 5:30 PM, Grand Forks officers attended to a business in the downtown core for a report of a theft of Thinkpad laptop. The owner had just turned their head for a brief moment and the item was taken. Officers immediately began their investigation, but unfortunately were unable to locate the item or a suspect at this time.

The RCMP would like to remind people of the importance of not leaving valuables unattended, as within a blink of an eye, they can be taken. In addition, its very important to keep important details of your valuables. Whenever you purchase a valuable item, such as an electronic or bike, take a few moments and record the make, model, and serial number of the item as well take a picture. This information is extremely valuable in the event an item is taken or gone missing.

Reckless and erratic driving cases on the rise

Over the past week, the Grand Forks RCMP responded to several complaints of erratic or reckless driving. The complaints ranged from vehicles either driving too slow or too aggressively on the highway, to people driving dirt bikes or quads on public roads, sometimes in a dangerous fashion.

For motorists, its important to give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination and not to rush. If you observe a reckless driver, do your best to distance yourself from them, and if you are able, obtain a license plate and vehicle and driver description, and report this when it is safe to do so.

As for riders on uninsured dirt bikes and quads, it is important to know that these vehicles are not to be on public roads or highways at anytime. Riders, regardless of age, caught on roads can face a multitude of charges under the Motor Vehicle Act and even the Criminal Code. Potential charges could be No Drivers License; No Insurance; Fail to Produce Documents; Failure to Wear a Helmet; as well as various driving offences. For riders with a suspended or prohibited status on their driver’s license, they can face being arrested and having to attend court at a later time, as well as have their bike or quad towed and impounded.

Whether it’s an urban or rural area that you live in, uninsured quads or bikes are never to be on the road, even if it’s a short distance to get from your property to a trail, stated Grand Forks Detachment Commander Sergeant Darryl Peppler. We are definitely seeing an increase in this, especially in our rural areas, and the Grand Forks Detachment along with the BC Highway Patrol will be increasing enforcement to curtail this activity.
