File # 2023-7974
On May 25, 2023 Comox Valley RCMP responded to multiple 911-calls reporting shots fired in the area of Cliffe Ave., Kilpatrick Ave., and Fitzgerald Ave., in Courtenay. Frontline officers attended and quickly determined that the shots had likely come from Bill Moore Park. During a systematic search of the park, no suspect(s) were located; however, officers found and seized various shotgun parts and spent shells.
This incident is a stark reminder of the danger posed by reckless and dangerous use of firearms
said Cst. Monika Terragni, Media Relations Officer, Comox Valley RCMP. The evidence at the scene suggests the shots were fired into the trees, and considering the nearby trails, it is deeply concerning. We are grateful that nobody was hurt but the potential consequences of this behaviour cannot be overstated.
Through diligent investigation, including the execution of a search warrant, the Comox Valley RCMP Street Crimes Unit, Bike Unit, and Frontline officers gathered additional evidence and identified a suspect. A 32-year old Comox Valley man, was arrested and charges are being recommended.
Comox Valley RCMP would like to express thanks to all of those who called and reported the shots fired and all of those who assisted as officers gathered evidence in the area.
