Comox Valley Unites to Raise Over $20,000 for Wounded Warrior Run BC

In a heartwarming display of community spirit, the Comox Valley Sports Centre was alive with energy on December 1, 2023, as more than 1200 enthusiastic attendees gathered for a hockey game that exceeded all expectations.

Kicking off at 7:00 p.m., Comox Valley First Responders and Canadian Armed Forces members faced off against the Comox Valley Glacier Kings. The competition was fierce, but it wasn't just about the score. This charity hockey event was a call to action, raising funds and awareness for the Wounded Warrior Run BC campaign. Comprising eight dedicated runners covering 800 kms in just 8 days across Vancouver Island, this campaign supports Wounded Warriors Canada—a mental health service provider for Trauma Exposed Professionals and their families.

Wounded Warriors Canada provides a range of clinically facilitated programs that have been developed to support the unique needs of Veterans, First Responders and their families. The programs support individuals, couples, spouses, surviving family members and children of those who serve or have served our country and communities.

What makes this event even more impactful is that all funds raised will remain on Vancouver Island, benefiting local programs that directly support our local community members.

Jacqueline Zweng, Director of the Wounded Warrior Run BC helped get things started with the ceremonial puck drop at centre ice. Jacqueline says, "It was incredible to stand on the ice and see the huge crowd that came out to support our Veterans, First Responders, and their families. The funds raised will make a difference right here on Vancouver Island and I know that we collectively made a difference and helped more people feel safe, supported and understood."

The success of this initiative would not have been possible without the support of our generous sponsors, volunteers, and the Glacier Kings Hockey Club. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to each sponsor and volunteer for their invaluable contribution towards supporting our Veterans and First Responders.

Sgt. Rob Brennan, a Comox Valley RCMP member, hockey player, and one of the dedicated runners for the 2024 Wounded Warrior Run BC, expressed his gratitude, saying, "The overwhelming turnout at the hockey game is a testament to the incredible community support for those facing challenges in the Comox Valley and beyond. The funds raised are fantastic, but the true highlight is the remarkable show of solidarity and support from our community, making it clear to those who may be suffering in silence that they are not alone."

This event not only served as a successful fundraising endeavor but also stood as a powerful demonstration of unity and compassion. Here's to lacing up for another game next year—Rematch!
