Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit in conjunction with Canadian National Railway Police will be increasing enforcement around railway crossings during National Rail Safety Week from September 23 to 29, 2024. This initiative is part of a broader effort to raise public awareness about safety around railway crossings and reduce incidents involving trains.
National Rail Safety Week is dedicated to educating the public on the importance of following railway crossing safety measures to prevent tragic incidents.
Our goal is to remind drivers and pedestrians of the risks associated with railway crossings and ensure they remain safe,said Sergeant Eric Baskette, Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit.
During this week, the Road Safety Unit will be focusing on enforcing railway crossing laws and promoting key safety messages to help road users avoid dangerous situations.
Key safety tips for railway crossings:
- Avoid distractions: Stay focused on the road and leave your phone alone while driving;
- Be prepared to stop: Always be alert at railway crossings and respect all signals, including gates and lights.
- Never attempt to drive under or around a closing or closed gate;
- Never stop on the tracks.
All road users are encouraged to educate themselves on the rules of railway crossings to prevent collisions and ensure their safety. For more information on railway safety, please visit Operation Lifesaver.
