Numerous arrests following joint operation with Metro Vancouver Transit Police

On November 7, 2020, Richmond RCMP, in conjunction with Metro Vancouver Transit Police and loss prevention officers, engaged in a joint operation in the central business district of Richmond, resulting in numerous arrests and recovery of stolen property.

The operation netted 17 arrests for various offences; charges are still pending.

As the Canada Line is an integral part of the downtown core and runs through the central business district of the city, Richmond RCMP teamed up with Metro Vancouver Transit Police in this joint initiative. Indeed, a notable observation from this operation was that a large number of the people arrested were not from Richmond, but had taken transit into the area to commit their crimes.

As it is easier to get anywhere with transit now, this operation is an example of multiple agencies working together to combat crime, said Sergeant Simon Lee, in charge of Richmond Targeted Enforcement Units. Prolific and property offenders can wind up being problems in multiple jurisdictions.

For example, a 49-year-old Vancouver resident of no fixed address was found and arrested on an outstanding warrant out of North Vancouver for multiple charges of uttering counterfeit currency.

Richmond RCMP also deployed bait bikes in the area, which resulted in four arrests throughout the night. Notably, one of the persons arrested for stealing the bait bike had also been charged for stealing one last year.

The success of the operation is an example of what happens when we all work together. Loss Prevention Officers and police are both very well-trained in identifying potential property crime offenders, said Constable Kenneth Lau. Hopefully this joint operation will make potential thieves think twice before coming to Richmond to do their acts.

The thefts of bait bikes illustrates how bicycles can be easy targets of thieves. Here are some tips on how to protect your bike from theft.
