The Trail and Greater District RCMP Detachment responded to the several calls for service over
the past week between May 4 – May 8, 2022. Below are some of the highlights from those calls.

Stolen car recovered and suspect arrested

Trail and Greater District and Salmo RCMP joined forces to investigate and arrest a 33-year-old Kelowna man for allegedly possessing a stolen vehicle and fleeing from police in Salmo and Trail, BC.

On May 3, 2022, at 8:43 p.m. a Trail woman reported that her blue 2016 BMW had been stolen from the 1700 block of 2nd Avenue, in Trail, BC.

On May 4, 2022, a witness reported that the blue BMW parked near the library in Salmo, BC. An officer from the Salmo RCMP attempted to detain a suspect, however he allegedly fled from the area in the BMW.

Trail RCMP located the BMW back in the Trail area and discovered the suspect walking down the street in the Glenmerry community. Officers placed the 33-year-old man from Kelowna under arrest and into custody. The man was found to be in possession of the keys to the stolen vehicle. Police recovered the BMW a short distance away.

BC Prosecution Service has laid the following criminal charges against Michael Shimaro-Campbell (33):

Michael Shimaro-Campbell remains in custody.

Excessive speeding results in large fine and seizure

On Friday, May 6, 2022, at approximately 12:22 p.m., a Trail and Greater District RCMP officer was conducting a routine traffic patrol when he observed a 2008 yellow Lotus sports car travelling at 122 km/h in a 60 km/h zone, in the 3000 block of Highway 3B, in Trail, BC. The officer detained the 54-year-old Montrose man and his Lotus roadside for speeding roadside.

The man was issued a $483 fine for Excessive Speed contrary to Section 148(1) of the BC Motor Vehicle Act and the Lotus was impounded for up to 7 days.

Trail RCMP will be out conducting traffic enforcement as the busy summer months’ approach. Please watch your speed and be considerate of other drivers on the roadway. – Sgt. Wicentowich

Assault against an elder woman in downtown Trail
File # 2022-1870

On Friday, May 6, 2022, at 5:57 p.m. Trail and Greater District RCMP responded to a 23-year-old Trail woman who allegedly assaulted a 78-year-old Trail woman in the 800 block of Helena Street, Trail, BC.

The dispute allegedly arose after the 78-year-old woman asked the 23-year-old woman to move as she was blocking a staircase located in the area. The younger woman struck then pushed down the elderly woman before fleeing the scene. Emergency Health Services transported the elderly victim was transported to the Trail hospital to received medical treatment for her injuries.

Trail RCMP located and arrested the 23-year-old woman for Assault contrary to Section 266 of the Criminal Code. She will make her first appearance on July 21, 2022, in Provincial Court, in Rossland, BC.

I understand the concerns that this type of crime causes in the community. We will be continuing to investigate the matter and monitoring the accused as she awaits her upcoming court date. – Sgt. Wicentowich

Black Bear Warning
File # 2022-1887

On Sunday, May 8, 2022, at 2:30 a.m. Trail and Greater District RCMP officers responded to a call about a large black bear attempting to break into a residence in the 1400 block of Lookout Street, in Trail, BC. The bear had broken some glass panels trying while trying to enter the residence. The officer conducted a foot patrol and discovered garbage strewn about the area and had concerns that the bear may have become habituated.

Trail RCMP notified the BC Conservation Service about this incident.

Spring is here and the bears are now awake and active. Please secure your garbage as well as removing any other bear attractants like outdoor freezers and bird feeders. It is unfortunate when a bear has to pay the price for human negligence. – Sgt. Wicentowich

Break, Enter, and Theft at the Waneta Mall
File # 2022-1831

On Sunday, May 8, 2022, at 4:30 a.m. a Trail and Greater District RCMP officer responded to a break, enter, and theft occurring at the Waneta Mall located in the 8000 block of Highway 3B, in Trail, BC.

The responding officer located the alleged suspect, a 35-year-old Castlegar man, who had broken into the mall and stole several small items.

The suspect attempted to run away from the officer who followed the man in his marked police vehicle. The suspect eventually tripped over his own feet and fell down; which promptly resulted in the officer arresting him for Break, Enter, and Theft contrary to Section 348(1) of the Criminal Code.

The 35-year-old Castlegar man will make his first appearance on June 23, 2022, in Provincial Court, in Rossland, BC.
