File # 23-6750 / 23-6717

The Prince Rupert RCMP looked to Search and Rescue teams for assisting with two files over the last week.

On October 10th, 2023 the RCMP received a call about a hiker in medical distress near Lachmach Lake. Unfortunately the hiker, despite efforts from the other hikers they were with, passed away. Due to the difficult path and terrain of the area the RCMP contacted search and rescue groups from Terrace and Prince Rupert.

Due to the efforts by both organizations the deceased hiker was recovered and brought back to Prince Rupert.

On October 12th, 2023 a report of a missing man was received by Prince Rupert RCMP and his last known location was possibly in the Butze Rapid hiking trail. Despite a rapid response and extensive patrols along the highway and a foot patrol in the Butze Rapid trail the man was not located immediately.

Search and rescue teams were once again consulted and activated. At approximately 7:00 p.m. the man was located near Oliver Lake where his well being was assessed and he was brought to the hospital for further treatment. He was later released.

"We appreciate the quick and efficient response from both Search and Rescue teams from Terrace and Prince Rupert," Media Relations Officer Constable Brody Hemrich said, "the RCMP offers its condolences to the hiker's family and we are sorry for their loss."

Victim services are available to those affected by either event and can be reached at 250-627-7779.

To reach the Prince Rupert RCMP call 250-624-2136, as always in case of an emergency dial 9-1-1.
